We’re pleased to share that several members of the Mountain River Venison farming community have taken top honours at this year’s Deer Industry Environmental Awards 2025, recognising bold, long-term leadership in sustainable deer farming.
These awards are a celebration of the commitment our farmers are making to not only produce exceptional venison, but to care for their land, animals, and communities.
Premier Elworthy Environmental Award
David and Jan Morgan & Family – Raincliff Station, South Canterbury
Sponsored by: Ministry for Primary Industries

David and Jan Morgan, along with their family, run Raincliff Station - a diverse and innovative deer-focused business in South Canterbury. Their farming system includes red hinds for velvet and trophy stags, Elk/Wapiti cows for terminal sires, and a strong focus on environmental risk management.
Strategic planning has seen sensitive areas retired, fenced, and planted, with more sediment traps on the way.
The judges were especially impressed with the Morgan family’s ability to balance economic performance with environmental care, their top-tier deer facilities, and their active engagement with the wider community -whether through wedding hosting, climbing adventures, or sunflower photo stops.
NZ Landcare Trust Award
Kim and Judith Rowe – Brookfields, Nelson
For Excellence in Sustainable Deer Farming

Kim and Judith Rowe have created a standout red deer and beef farm in the Motueka Valley, with a strong focus on soil, water, and forest protection. They’ve successfully protected large native forest areas through QEII Covenants, implemented 6 km of riparian plantings, and developed custom deer-safe tree guards to support native regeneration.
Judges praised their long-term environmental planning, ability to gain funding support, and their social responsibility - offering the local community meaningful opportunities to learn about farming and conservation.
Previous Winners: Still Leading the Way
We continue to acknowledge the achievements of long-standing MRV partners who are leading in practical environmental performance.
Scott Hassall of Iffley Land, North Canterbury was previously recognised for his innovation on-farm, winning an award at the Deer Industry New Zealand Conference for his innovative, whole-system approach to farming in a demanding environment. Judges highlighted his use of cut-and-carry cropping to minimise paddock damage and his approach to distributing silage waste to reduce environmental impact - showcasing a focus on practical, results-driven innovation.
At High Peak Station, the Guild family was awarded the Gordon Stephenson Trophy at the 2024 Ballance Farm Environment Awards.
Recognised as Canterbury’s regional supreme winner, High Peak stood out for its multi-generational planning, environmental stewardship, and diversification across tourism, sheep, deer, cattle, and honey - all underpinned by a strong sustainability focus.
Both farms demonstrate how long-term planning and smart innovation contribute to a more resilient and valuable Mountain River Venison supply chain.
Thank You
These awards are a practical sign that the Mountain River Venison community is making real progress - on-farm, in the environment, and across the industry. From protecting waterways and native bush to improving soil and stock performance, it’s good to see this work being recognised.
